TRUE CRIME BOOK REVIEW

Heist!
The $17 Million Loomis Fargo Theft
by
Jeff Diamant
(Published 2002 1st US Edition by John F. Blair Publishers,
Price 24.95 US, 242 pp, Index, Illustrated)

Actually the title of this book should be, "When Rednecks Rob". If you're
planning a high stakes robbery this is the book to read on what NOT to
do. Why some of these characters are stupidier than ticks on a hound.
Alright, in all seriousness, if you read this book you're going to be
shaking your head saying to yourself "what were they thinking".

Diamant, covered the story for the Charlotte Observer from the
get go so are are given a bird's eye view of the crime from the start.
And what a crime it is, on October 4, 1997 Bill Ghantt a worker
for Loomis, Fargo and Co. succeeded in taking over $17 million
dollars in one night. Packed it up in a van and away he went.
But Ghantt knew he was going to be a wanted man and the
best approach for him was to take a bit now, for surviving,
and leave the remainder with his "trusted" friends. Ghantt
figured in a couple of years they would no longer have any
money problems, ever.

So, your a buddy of Ghantt's and he's just left you millions
what do you do? Well, I'll tell you what you don't do, move
from a mobile home to a $600,000 mansion not 15 minutes away,
buy a new BMW Z3, a $43,000 ring, and on and on and on, all
this within 6 months of the robbery. And meanwhile Ghantt's
surviving on M&Ms in some Mexico hotel because his money
has run out. Incredible.

Diamant covers it all from the heist to the capture and
everything in between. This book is a fun read, you'll be
getting through it in no time and commenting to yourself
along the way! Recommended.
