TRUE CRIME BOOK REVIEW

Into the Mirror
The Life of Master Spy Robert P. Hanssen
by
Norman Mailer and Lawrence Schiller
(Published 2002 1st US Edition by HarperCollins Publishers,
Price 39.50 US, 317 pp)
I receive quite a few books for review from publishers, marketing
groups, etc. such as this title. This book also came with some
marketing material of which the following statement originated:
"a startling fictionalized but true portrait". OK, at first I thought
how can something be fictionalized BUT true, then I
remembered where I use to work and we had this guy there
working that was stupid BUT smart. So I guess it can happen.
Any how, this book is based on research done by Norman
Mailer for an upcoming TV series. Schiller decided that
a book should be about from Mailer's research and this
is the result. The book is written in novel form. It is
very well written and easy to read, and they try and take
you into Hanssen's mind. I did enjoy reading it however
I was keeping an open mind on whether or not things
happened as they did in the book.
If you're looking for reference material on Hanssen I'd have
to say to pass on this title (anything that has any "fictionalization"
I'd pass on for reference), however if you're looking for pretty
good spy story, with some truth, then this is the book for you.
