TRUE CRIME BOOK REVIEW

Bin Laden
by
Adam Robinson
(Published 2002 1st US Edition by Arcade Publishing,
Price 23.95 US, 302 pp, Index)
What with today's headlines I wanted to find out more about Bin Laden,
his followers and the Al-Qaeda network. This book looked as good as
any to start.
First, if you are looking for a book with coverage on Bin Laden and
the attack of 9/11 you may wish to pass on this title. While there
is some mention of the attack (placement of Atta in US for
example) it is still too early to look at this terrorist act in-depth.
However, if you are looking for a book on Bin Laden, his childhood,
his relatives, his stay in Beirut, his move to Afghanistan to defend
against the Russians, the terrorist attacks in Kenya, then this
title would suffice. Although dry at times we do find out quite
a bit about Bin Laden and his family's early years.
Bin Laden's youth, he was a single children from
one of his father's many wives, seemed to be filled with his
desire for attention. His family was a large one and so getting
attention was a most difficult task, he was especially wanting
this attention from his father Mohammed Bin Laden. Although Mohammed
died when Osama was 10 years old his desire for attention,
unfortunately,
did not.
What I found of most interest was
the creation and development
of the Al-Qeada network which Mr. Robinson does an excellent job
of detailing. This alone, I found, makes this book worthwhile.
A good solid PBS type of read. Just the facts. Recommended for
those interested in Bin Laden's development.
