Killing Pablo
by
Mark Bowden

What a great book! This book didn't let me down at all. From
the title you've probably guessed, and correctly, that it's about the death of
Pablo Escobar. I've always found the exploits of the Colombia Drug Cartels
fascinating (check out the movie "Blow"). The book briefly goes through
the rise of Pablo but it mainly concentrates on how the Colombians, along
with help from the US and a Colombian based death squad, tracked down
and killed Pablo. It's a tie in with the CNN documentary of the same name.

It's a great insight also on Pablo himself, how he went from a run of the
mill gangster to the head of the most powerful crime cartel, should I say it,
in the world. Towards the end you can see Pablo lose all touch with reality,
he even accuses the government of committing crimes against him! He
believes (or wishes to believe and make others believe) that he is the
one unjustly accused of crimes and if the government won't stop this
unnecessary persecution he'll be forced to blow up a plane or building.
Astounding. You add to this the fact that a Death Squad made up of
Pablo's enemies begins cutting down his comrades, the Colombians
army is using new technology in the search for Pablo which, most often
then not, doesn't work properly, former allies of Pablo's (most notably
Carlos Lehrer) help in the search and many more little tidbits
you have the makings of a classic true crime book.

This is one hell of a great crime book. The kind you read through at
a record pace and then regret when your done. Recommended.
