TRUE CRIME BOOK REVIEW

The Adversary
by
Emmanuel Carrere
We have all told little, meaningless for the most part, "white
lies" in our lives. Maybe you didn't want to
go to that play, or the in-laws for dinner, what's a small little lie about working late
and can't make it?
But what if that small lie leads to another, which leads to another and then another. Lies
can be
very dangerous when not kept in check. Jean-Claude Romand didn't keep the lies in his life
in
check and what started as a few small little white lies snowballed into a single life made
of many lies,
so many lies that even he couldn't remember which were true and which were false.
"The Adversary" takes place in France, and begins
in 1993 with a fire at the Romand's house where Romand's
wife and two children are found dead, not from the fire but from bullets. Romand, himself
is
found alive, barely. Later, it is found out that before he murdered his wife and children
he had killed his parents.
And so, Romand's life of lies became known, he told his neighbours, friends and
family that he worked
for WHO (World Health Organization) and they believed him, why not? He didn't.
How
does one get away with such blatant lies as the one just mentioned? Mr. Carrere
tells this fantastic
story in his book.
From the very start of this book to the end I was hooked. I have read a
lot of true crime books
in my life (hence this site) and very few have gotten me like Mr. Carrere's "The
Adversary". What
possesses a man from destroying not only his life but those he loves? I found
myself thinking of
this crazy situation even when I wasn't reading the book, on the way to work, out to meet
the
gang, whatever I became wrapped up in Romand's life. It would be a crime in itself not to
read "The Adversary".
Absolutely recommended!
