TRUE CRIME INK Cigar City Mafia A Complete History of the Tampa UnderworldBy Scott M. Deitche My name is Scott M. Deitche. I am the author of Cigar City Mafia: A Complete History of the Tampa Underworld. This is the first book ever written about the Tampa mob. Growing up in New Jersey I had a keen interest in mob movies and living near New York City, the evening news was constantly full of real-life mob stories. In 1995 I came across a copy of the Kefauver hearings from 1950. I read the Tampa section and found as much corruption and gangland warfare as in some of the larger mob cities. So many books have been written about the mob in New York City, Philly and Chicago, yet many smaller families had just as fascinating stories to tell. I tried to come up with the most complete history of a Mafia family, detailing not only the exploits of major mob figures like Santo Trafficante Jr., but also lesser-known individuals like Nick Scaglione and Jimmy Donofrio. The book is full of never-before-seen mugshots and photos as well as a comprehensive cast of characters with dozens of Florida wiseguys. Over 6 years of research and writing went into the book. No Tampa mobster has ever turned state’s evidence, so insider accounts were hard to come by. I interviewed dozens of people, toured mob hangouts and gravesites, compiled family trees and detailed arrest records, and poured over thousands of pages of court transcripts, wiretaps, newspaper articles, law enforcement reports, surveillance reports, FOIA documents, FBI memos, books, magazines, and various other sources to come up with, what I hope, is a valuable addition to the current canon of Mafia-related books.
